Minutes for UCL Proton Calorimetry Meeting, 17th January 2018 (D17, Physics & Astronomy, UCL)

Present

Simon Jolly, Matthieu Hentz, Anastasia Basharina-Freshville, Jordan Silverman, Dan Walker

DW:

  • Integration of Leroy binary signals were giving negative results:
    • Probably a result of including rising edge of pulse when calculating baseline.
    • By cutting off the second half of pre-trigger pulse, only 1 pulse giving negative integral.
    • SJ suggests looking at smallest pulses to make sure integration is valid; also check negative result.
    • ABF suggests comparing integration windows of 150 ns and lower to Caen ADC data: currently using window over whole pulse.
  • To Do:
    • Fix negative pulse.
    • Adjust timing window to replicate Caen spectrum.
    • Meeting on Monday with Tony Price.

JS:

  • Reading (and reading (and reading)) Geant4 manuals, MSci report from MH and PBTWiki pages on Clatterbridge simulations.
  • To Do:
    • Will set up meeting with MH to check progress on Clatterbridge simulations.
    • Copy over simulations to user directory to play around with simulations.

ABF:

  • Will get JS and DW to check thickness of scintillator sheets.
  • Update on single module detector simulations and scintillator paint tests:
    • Checking Monte Carlo Truth with detector output.
    • Still a difference between MC Truth and reconstructed resolutions, but much smaller than before when using mono energetic proton beam.
    • Resolutions are good enough for paper.
  • Paint tests with scintillator still pending:
    • Retested painted scintillator sheet with higher LED voltage: resolution now matches unpainted, wrapped scintillator.
  • To Do:
    • Paint another sheet with aerosol.
    • Writing paper.
    • Sensor selection for beam test.

MH:

  • Mostly coursework for CDT courses: Numerical Optimisation, High Performance Computing, Machine Learning with Big Data, Research Computing with C++, Inverse Problems in Imaging.
  • Background reading on pCT reconstruction and group project at The Economist.
    • Mathematical background to CT reconstruction.
    • Notation in Comp Sci is different...
  • Staging of Clatterbridge now finished!
    • Some behaviour doesn't quite make sense: will investigate.
    • Still need to get faster particle readout working with buffering.
  • To Do:
    • Exams Monday & Tuesday.
    • Meeting with Jordan on Wednesday.
    • Buffering of readout in Geant4.
