Particle experiment: Measurements senstitive to new physics with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC

The ATLAS experiment continues to probe the high energy frontier of our knowledge, accumulating ever-increasing statistical precision as the integrated luminosity steadily increases. Many open questions remain. Is the Standard Model valid far above the electroweak symmetry breaking scale? Is the Higgs boson exactly the particle predicted in the Standard Model? Is the Higgs a portal to Dark Matter, or to an understanding of the matter-antimatter asymmetry? We will address these by making precision measurements of differential cross sections designed to be sensitive to such effects. The student will also be engaged in the day-to-day running of one of the biggest, and most exciting, physics experiments ever contructed.
