Past & Future

LEP is essentially split into four experiments with the acronyms ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL; each is set up to analyse the particle collisions with different types of detectors with a view to learning various different things about the collisions, the particles involved and their properties. CERN is constantly evolving with new and improved experiments constantly being planned, the proton sychrotron used since the late fifties was converted and is now used as part of the accelerating mechanism of LEP2. In the not too distant future LEP2 will make way for another experiment called LHC.
