RESEARCH :
Since retiring from the Department in 2004, I have been an Emeritus Professor, concentrating
on my research in the field of hadron physics that lies somewhere between particle and nuclear
physics. Although trained as a theorist, I work extensively with experimentalists, interpreting
their results and suggesting further experiments that might clarify their findings. Much of my
current interest is focussed on the programme being undertaken at the ANKE spectrometer
facility of the COSY-Jülich storage ring in Germany. In addition to the fruitful experiments on
the production of strange and non-strange mesons in nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-deuteron
collisions near threshold, the use of polarised protons and deuterons in experiments in the GeV
range offers the chance of refining further the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction.
