Orientation

Theories that add extra (compactified) space-like dimensions to the three dimensions of our macroscopic world are well established as a possible basis for new physics. Most prominently, such extra dimensions are required for consistency in string theories. On the other hand, theories with additional time-like dimensions are hard to construct consistently, and the extra "times" lack any obvious intuitive interpretation. Nevertheless, their construction can help elucidate the difficult notion of "time" and provides novel insights into potential physics beyond the Standard Model.

What

In this project, you will review existing attempts to implement theories with extra-time dimensions in the literature. You will elucidate the key points the difficulties in constructing such theories, if possible provide solutions and determine if extra time-dimensions are an interesting option to pursue.

Special Knowledge

Knowledge of Quantum Field Theory and Group Theory, ability and interest in analytic calculation
