The Jeff Effect

The idea here was to plot two dE\dX curves for muons that are 'above nominal energy' and 'below nominal energy'. The 'nominal energy' in this case is exactly 2.0 GeV.

This plot shows the ranges of all the particles seen in the data in the region of interest.

This plot shows 2 GeV Monte Carlo muons with a 5% energy spread but no pion decay kinematics. There are an appreciable number of muons out at plane 48 and 58.

Taking a simple mean of the dE/dX within a relatively flat region (planes 8 - 43) shows that there seems not to be any difference between the two samples, 45-52: 542.985 / 52-58: 542.236. By eye, the blue and black curves do not appear to be clearly separated but seem to be within each other's errors.
