Initial Blast Tests through MBNG WAN - 13th February 2003

Purpose

The purpose of this test is to determine the performance of the hosts on the WAN link. In order to do this, we sent iperfs between the host pairs (ie mbng1 and gig1, mbng2 and gig5 etc.).

As we wish to determine the max performance, we used udp streams and monitored both the sending and recv ends.

Conclusion

The machines at UCL are fine. They are able to send and recv pkts over the WAN at line speed using iperf udp @ 1472 pkt size.

There is a severe performance limitation at MAN on all machines. This is shown by the fact that their send rates a considerably lower than the ones at UCL. There also appears to be loss which results in the throughput being less at the recv end (sending rate is fine) for the UCL->MAN.

It is possible that it is the software firewalls that are installed on the MAN machines that are affecting the throughput. Suggestion: try tests again without the firewall on the MAN end.

It was also discovered that a couple of the machines has the gigE set up as fibre on Syskonnect cards - NOT the proposed e1000 Copper Intel's. Studies by Steven shows that the SysKonnects do not perform very well.
