Hi, we had a discussion at this morning's meeting about plans for the magnetic measurements, some of which is summarized in the agenda item 5 at http://www-project.slac.stanford.edu/ilc/testfac/ESA/meetings/agenda25sep2006.html Ray and I met last Friday with Zach Wolf, head of magnetic measurement test facility (MMF) here. Scott Anderson also joined us who will do the measurements. He's a former MCC operator that I know fairly well and is quite good. Scott gave us a document we need to complete to specify the requests to MMF for the measurements, http://www-project.slac.stanford.edu/ilc/testfac/ESA/files/BPMSpectrometer/MagnetTest%20PlanRev5.doc. We need to do this with guidance from Morozov's technote, http://www-project.slac.stanford.edu/ilc/testfac/ESA/TechNotes/TN-2006-2.pdf, on the 1037 magnetic simulations. I told Scott that we'd get the request document back to him in about 2 weeks. *Would like if the DESY and Dubna colleagues could take responsibility for fleshing this out, with assistance/discussion from the rest of us.* please comment In particular need to specify details of the measurements that allow us to understand the systematic errors and ultimate capabilities. Concerning dates for the measurements and resources we need to supply, MMF will do all the measurements we need with their people and requests flexibility in scheduling dates. We plan to make the magnets available to them by mid-october and it's possible they will start on the measurements before Nov. 1. Most likely time for measurements in MMF is still early november. We emphasized our need to understand in detail the systematics and that highly desirable to have one of our people, hopefully a visiting collaborator, available to spend a significant amount of time observing the setup and procedure for taking the MMF data. We do not need to provide manpower for taking the actual data however or working with the setup hardware. We will want to quickly analyze the data as it becomes available, but we can ship the data to people for analysis at their home institutions if needed. Concerning ESA measurements, we're having discussions this week and should have a better plan and schedule by end of the week. The ESA facility manager (Carsten) was away last week, but returns Wednesday. Need discussions with him concerning whether to setup the magnets for test in situ on the beamline or to move the SPEAR girders outside the bunker where it's easier to work. There's alignment issues, also earthquaking, power and lcw and interlocks for the magnets, field probes etc. to understand all the implications. Target is to be ready for powering 1 magnet in ESA by ~Nov. 1, commissioning magnetic measurements there in early november and beginning magnetic measurement studies by mid-november. Will be good to discuss all this in a phone meeting. There's a T474 phone meeting planned for Monday October 2 and that is likely a good time. I may not be able to call in to that meeting unfortunately. I have knee surgery scheduled for this Friday and likely won't start coming back to work till a week later, though will work from home (I hope); can maybe call in for the Monday meeting. Cheers, mike
