Travelling to Modane

By train:

Travelling by train from London to Modane allows one to either go via Paris, or cut out the capital by changing at Lille Europe, where many Eurostars (both Paris and Brussels-bound) stop. The journey time from London to Modane is about 8-9 hours by either route.

If changing in Lille, it is usually necessary to change again in Lyon. Going via Paris, one has to transfer from the Gare du Nord to the Gare de Lyon; to do this, there is the Metro or, if you want to see a bit of Paris and have the time, there is the No. 65 bus. It stops in the Rue du Faubourg St Denis, which runs along the eastern flank of the station - if you come out of the station and turn left and left again, you will see the bus stop some 50 metres ahead of you. Paris bus drivers will sell you a ticket for cash (about 1.80 euros), although they often appear to do this somewhat begrudgingly; alternatively, get your ticket from a machine in the metro station (it is the same ticket). The bus is actually easier than the metro (though it may take slightly longer) because it is direct, whereas if you go by metro you have to change.

You can get train times from the Deutsch Bahn website. It is much better than the Eurostar and SNCF websites, and covers the whole of Europe. (One word of caution: if searching for journeys via Lille, make sure your train leaves from Lille Europe - the Eurostar station - rather than Lille Flandres, which is a short walk away).

Modane is a small place, and it is possible to walk from the station to the lab. However, you can probably arrange to be met at the station. If you do end up having to walk, you basically come out of the station and turn right into the long road (Avenue Jean Jaures) that runs alongside the railway; after this road crosses the railway, turn right at the next junction into the Route de Bardonecchia and follow it round. There is a map on the LSM website.

Travelling to Bordeaux

By train:

The same comments apply as for Modane: you can go via Paris, or there is the option of going via Lille or Marne la Vallee-Chessy. Whichever route you take, you can get from London to Bordeaux in about 7-8 hours.

If going via Paris, you will need to get to the Gare Montparnasse. Here the bus is not such an attractive option because there is no direct bus connecting the two. You can get the 48 to the Louvre, then the 95; alternatively you can go by Metro, and this time it is direct - you don't need to change. Travelling on the Paris Metro, you need to know the line number and the name of the station towards which you are travelling (they don't do "northbound", "southbound" etc). In this case it is Line 4, direction Porte d'Orleans.

The main station in Bordeaux is Bordeaux St Jean. If travelling to the university you will probably have to take tram C to the centre of town and then change onto tram B. You can do this with a single ticket (about 1.40 euros) that can be obtained from a machine at the tram stop.

Travelling to LAL Orsay

This is easy by Eurostar. You just need to get onto the RER (a sort of fast Metro) at the Gare du Nord - line B (branch B4), direction St Remy-les-Chevreuse, and get off at Orsay Ville. Journey time 3-4 hours from London.
