  1. Jim’s Joblist

A review of JECs OPAL responsibilities.

Data quality Monitoring ( New data / reRopes )

This task is obviously an essential part of maintaining the FD. PD ( Paul Dervan ) is now able to run the job, analyse the data & update the www pages. The private OD/FDET analysis code has been submitted to Mathias for inclusion in OD416.

Luminosity determination

There are two aspects to the luminosity determination –

  1. Determining the FD cross section during on-peak calibration runs
  2. Supplying luminosity information to the collaboration

The first of these is an important aspect of understanding the detector; all changes in Xsec over the LEP1.5 – LEP2 period can be reproduced ( eg the 1996 Xsec with two dead tube quadrants can be reproduced by reprocessing 1995 data & ignoring these quadrants ). It may be possible to add the on-peak Xsec measurement to the DaQ monitoring job – JEC to investigate.

The second aspect might be dropped if effort is unavailable. However, the ( smear mode ) MC correction to the energy dependence of the FD cross section has been determined from 90 to 210 Gev, so in principle it is only necessary to update the SU database with the on-peak Xsec once each year, and FD luminosity will then be calculated at all LEP energies.

Detector code

Partly routine operations ( updating version numbers, updating the FD offsets ), but also fixing bugs or other ( real or imaginary ) problems. OPAL code is managed using Patchy ! Younger RAs need not apply ( yet )

Calibration

FK online calibration OK. FB – no new dead tubes for few years. FE – requires manual calibration

Only FE has recently required attention. Latest PAW Kumac files believed to be in the possession of Peter Hobson. Need someone to take this over

OPAL :-

ROCROS / ROLUMI

(Xsec, Luminosity package inherited from Claudio Grandi )

It was thought unlikely that the FD group can continue to maintain this code; offer it for adoption ?

GOPAL, FD and Beampipe

Rather complex, all geometries since 1989 implemented

No FD changes likely here – so no necessity for FD to continue this support

WW / TGV physics

A problem for the TGV physics groups, UCL/CERN

Summary

Some effort needs to be found to cover most of the first 4 items; Luminosity service may be dropped. Unlikeley that any non-FD specific tasks can be continued.

Shifts

Filling shifts from UCL now more critical, due to lack of students @ CERN. A certain amount of coercion may be required. Paul Dervan, Jenny Thomas added to list of coecrees.

FE ( Gamma catcher )

Searches groups are moaning about dead segments, tho have not produced conclusive proof of irreparable damage to their analyses. TE may be able to cover for absent segments. Can also upgrade connectors. Strong disinclination to open up the endcaps, due to perceived risk of collateral damage, & lack of manpower available to fix it.

PS pointed out that all subdetectors need checking out even if OPAL is not opened, & that this operation was not formally scheduled this year( but nevertheless got done )

FF ( Far Fwd )

Odds & … ( DJM )
