UCL HEP Research Associate Position: AWAKE (Ref: 1686010)

We have an immediate opening for a Research Associate position to work on the AWAKE experiment.

The AWAKE project at CERN is currently running, demonstrating for the first time proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. UCL’s primary responsibility in the AWAKE project is the measurement of the accelerated electrons, primarily the energy distribution, but possibly also the emittance of the electron bunch. The magnetic spectrometer to make the measurements is currently being installed in the AWAKE experiment and will be commissioned this year. Measurements of the properties of the accelerated electrons will then be performed during running through 2018. We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to be involved in all aspects of the spectrometer and measurements. This will involve running and maintenance of the system, developing the data acquisition system, simulation of AWAKE and the spectrometer system, analysis of data, developing measurement plans, as well as supporting the UCL PhD students on AWAKE. The candidate will also work on development of a future diagnostic system for a planned AWAKE Run 2.

The applicant should have or be about to receive a PhD in accelerator, plasma or high energy physics. The applicant should have experience in experimental work. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication. The candidate will be expected to undertake frequent travel to CERN, in particular for data-taking runs and AWAKE meetings.

This position is funded for 2 years in the first instance. Appointment at Grade 7 (£34,635-£41,864 per annum) is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £29,809-£31,432 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
