PhD project: The AWAKE experiment

Supervisor: Prof. Matthew Wing

The AWAKE experiment is embarking on a new programme in which we aim to accelerate electrons in plasma wakefields to higher energies, maintain beam quality and demonstrate the scalability of the process. All of these will then inform the possibility of building an experiment for particle physics based on plasma wakefield acceleration. The student will design a new magnetic spectrometer system to measure the accelerated electrons, both their energy and spatial extent. This will include detailed simulations, evaluation of different detector technologies, optics calculations, sourcing and testing equipment as well as integration within the AWAKE setup at CERN. The system will then be installed, commissioned, calibrated and used for data taking. The student should then perform the first measurements of increased electron energy gain for inclusion in their thesis. More details on AWAKE at UCL can be found here.
