PhD project: The LUXE experiment

Supervisor: Prof. Matthew Wing

A joint studentship with DESY, Hamburg is offered to work on the LUXE experiment. The LUXE experiment is being developed to measure non-linear QED in collisions of a high-intensity electron bunch with a high power laser. This will investigate physics in a region previously unexplored in the laboratory but present in many phenomena in astrophysics, accelerators and atomic physics. The experiment is under preparation with data taking expected in 2024. The student would be ideally placed to analyse the first LUXE data and investigate QED in a new regime. At UCL, we are developing a scintillator-camera system to measure a high flux of electrons and the student would take a lead in the instillation and commissioning of this detector. This is an ideal opportunity for the student to see a detector through from early development to physics measurements. The student would be expected to spend a significant period of time (at least 2 years) in Hamburg so that they can work on the experiment directly as well as with other collaboration members.
