PhD project: Probing the energy frontier with precision measurements at ATLAS

Supervisor: Prof. Jonathan Butterworth

A vital question that has to be answered over the next few years at the LHC is: Does the Standard Model continue to describe nature far above the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale? And if so, how far and to what precision? This can be answered in large part by measuring model-independent differential cross sections for "Standard-Model-like" final states such leptons and jets, and comparing them both to precision Standard Model predictions and to beyond-the-Standard-Model possibilities. The project will involve making a key ATLAS measurement, and also developing an understanding of the phenomenology involved, with an emphasis on software development for event generators and related software tools.
