Download Java Plugin
The Java Plug-in is
provided free of charge by Sun Microsystems (subject to a license agreement,
which you will have to agree to during the installation process).
It provides a separate Java implementation for most common versions of
Netscape and Internet Explorer (see the list of requirements,
below, for details). This allows it to run Java applets,
such as the new version of the Event Display,
that require the latest (JDK 1.1)
version of the Java language, regardless of the Java support
provided by the web browser.
The latest version of Java Plug-in can be obtained direct from Sun.
To speed download, particularly for European users, the Windows version
can also be obtained from this site
(the Rutherford
Appleton Laboratory in the UK). Note that this is the US version,
which doesn't include International-language support - this isn't
required by the Event Display and its inclusion would increase the download
size by 50%.
Note that the Java Plug-in need only be downloaded once.
Thereafter it will be loaded from your hard disk as soon
as the Plug-in version of the Event Display pages are visited.
Select the version and download location from the following list.
- Windows 95/98/NT non-international
version of the Java Plugin from this site [4.7 Mb].
- All
versions of the Java Plugin from Sun Microsystems in California.
If you chose the second option above, follow
the (similar) installation instructions given there.
Otherwise
- Download the plugin installation file by selecting
the first option above.
If your browser prompts you with the option to just "Open It",
then it is probably easier to do this.
Otherwise, your browser will prompt you for a location to save
the downloaded file. Chose a suitable temporary directory,
and remember this location. Ensure that the file name ends in .exe.
- When the download is complete (may take many minutes,
depending on the speed of your internet connection), find the file
location with the Windows Explorer and run it
(double-click). This will be done automatically if you
chose "Open It" in the previous step.
- Answer the questions asked by the installation program.
- When the installation is complete, you may have to restart
your web browser in order for it to recognise the new plugin.
This is probably not necessary in Internet Explorer 4; and
in Netscape 4 it may be sufficient to
select Help|About Plug-ins (where you
should see "Java Plug-in for Netscape Navigator" in
the list).
If you do restart, you may want to bookmark one of these pages
so that you can easily return to it.
Once the Java Plug-in is installed, you can go back
to the list of events and
select one for viewing.
Sun's minimum recommended system requirements
for the Java Plug-in software are as follows:-
- Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0
