1. Meeting agenda.

-Allocation of group roles.

-Setting up of regular group meeting times.

-Meeting with group board member.

2. Group members.

Found out that two group members have dropped out, the group members are now as follows: BP, PP, JSB, TT and BA, only.

3. Allocation of roles.

We then discussed allocation of group project roles.

Action: It was decided that BP should start off as group chairman with possible rotation of this task and for the time being that BA would be the group secretary. Decided preliminarily that PP and TT should start to look at the programming side ('root' package), as they both had the most experience with C++.

3. Group meeting times and location.

We discussed possible times for the group to meet and where.

Action: decided that the most convenient times to suit all of us would be: 12.00 on WED or 3.00 on THURS. Also we discussed whether it would be possible to use the HEP library as a venue for group meetings.

4. Meeting with board member.

Went to discuss the project with board member and group supervisor, JMB. We discussed the setting up of the web page and the 'root' package. Action: need to get back to JMB about getting the relevant example data for the group. Also got some suggestions about how to split up the assigned tasks.

Any other business

-It was decided that I should check out the previous years web site. -The next meeting will be held at, 3.00 on THURS. BP has all of our contact home No and mobile no. so he can get hold of us immediately if anything important comes up.

-Meeting Close.

Minutes of meeting 2

Physics group 8, 1pm, Thursday, January 18th, 2001

Physics common room ground floor, physics building

Present: Brian Abbey, Paul Price, Jean-Séb Bouillard (JSB), Ben Peters, and Tom Trevethan.

1. Meeting agenda and matters arising from last meeting.

-This week need to finalise times and locations of group meetings.

-Discuss what research people had carried out.

-Start to think about the web page.

2. Research and Analysis.

PP and TT went over the research they had carried into C++ programming.

Action: PP and TT had made arrangements to meet with Claire (who was familiar with 'root') after the meeting.

BP and JSB discussed some of the theory behind our project.

BP went over with the group the main objectives of the theory part of the project.

BP then went on to explain about some of what goes on at HERA, and about the specific type of collisions we are interested in. i.e. low angle collisions where photon structure is evident.

3. Web Page.

BA then explained what I had found out about last years web page.

Action: It was decided that BA should start thinking about the layout and content of our web site, as well as possible ways of presenting our data. Also will look at the actual mechanics of setting up a web page. (Maybe using 'DreamWeaver'?)

4. Any other business.

-It was decided that everyone should continue with their assigned tasks, with Ben and Jean researching into more detail about the theory.

Action: Decided next week we will try to use the HEP library on the 1st floor of the physics building as the venue for our meeting at 3 on Thurs.

-Meeting Close.

Minutes of meeting 3

Physics group 8, 1pm, Thursday, February 2nd, 2001

HEP library physics building, 1st floor.

Present: Brian Abbey, Paul Price, Jean-Séb Bouillard (JSB), Ben Peters, and Tom Trevethan.

1. Meeting agenda and matters arising from last meeting.

-Paul and Tom have been to see Claire about the 'root' package, and are now a bit more confident on how to proceed.

-Research into web page.

2. Computer analysis.

PP and TT told us that we would need to set up a computer account, and that it would take about a to do this. Also that we would need to talk to JMB first.

Action: BA to set up a meeting with JMB. They also told us that we would need to use computers with the lynux operating system in order to use the 'root' package.

General discussion of the type of data we would need to give PP and TT in order to get the appropriate experimental data. For instance we would need to tell them the scattering angle of the collision, since the scattering angle effects the ratio of one type of collision to another.

We then looked at a page of variables from the zeus detectors web site.

3. Theory.

BP and JSB had been doing some more reading up on theory, and they had made some simplified notes of material relevant to us, which they showed the rest of the group and then photocopied. The group then looked at a diagram of the ZEUS detector itself.

4. Web page.

Finally BA talked about what I had learnt about using the web page designing package, and discussed possible ideas about how we would like to present our data.

Any other business.

1. Meeting agenda and matters arising from last meeting.

-Last meeting we decided that we would have the 'Root' package sorted out by today.

-Need to ask JMB about pseudorapidity

-Need to find out more detail about project briefing for the web page.

2. The 'Root' Package

TT and PP discussed how much progress they had made with the root package They now seem to have the package more or less up and running, and have got the browser working. Thus fulfilling the target the group set them in the last meeting.

JMB discussed with them the next step they needed to take.

3. Jets

BP talked about the thesis upon which are project was based, and told us that he thought we need only be concerned with the two highest energy jets, when looking at the interaction of the positron and proton.

JMB and BP discussed why this was the case. There was then a general discussion about why it was that we could discard the energy from the third jet in a three jet process, and JMB talked about the need for consistency, he also said that the third jet would contribute a maximum of about 20% to the energy.

Action: JMB suggested that the group should plot the jets on a picture of the detector, in order to help with the presentation.

4. Theory

BP explained to the group about hadronisation and quark, anti-quark pairs. JMB then discussed with the group about cyclotron radiation. We then had a discussion about pseudorapidity, as this was highlighted as a major grey area in the previous group meeting.

JMB defined scalar rapidity [ln(Tan(theata/2))] and drew a diagram explaining what he meant, and showing how you approach infinity at a certain point (Tan90=infinity).

5. The web page

JMB talked about how we might choose to display our information on the web page and the scientific level of understanding the people accessing our site would need to have (about A-Level standard).

The group had a general discussion about the web design package 'Dreamweaver'.

Action: Learn more about how to use 'Dreamweaver' by next week.

6. The prsentation

JMB suggested that it might be a good idea computer projector in our talk.

Action: become familiar with powerpoint computer presentation package well in advance of oral presentation.

Any other business

Can start booking time in the HEP library for group meetings under JMB name. Possibly we may be able to obtain a key to the HEP library so that we are able to access its resources at any time.

Meeting Ends.

Minutes of meeting 5

Physics group 8, 3pm, Thursday, February 15th 2001

HEP Library physics building 1st floor

Present: Brian Abbey, Paul Price, Jean-Séb Bouillard (JSB), Ben Peters, Tom Trevethan and two observers from group seven.

Meeting agenda and matters arising from last meeting

-Web page design needs to be finalised.

-Need to become familiar with 'Dreamweaver'

-Form a rough plan of the material that would need to go into the web site.

1. Web page content

BP began the meeting by discussing how we could present the theory behind our project in such a way that an A-Level student would understand it.

BP and JSB then discussed the level of detail we would need to include in our web site in order to covey the fundamental ideas behind our project without confusing the reader.

TT discussed the particle adventure web site, and some of the features of the site which we could possibly incorporate into our own

2. Discussion of theory

PP then asked BP whether we would need to know the energy of the photons.

BP explained that although we did not need to know the energy of the photons we would need to know other energies such as that of the positron.

TT discussed what he and PP would need to do once they received all their relevant data for the experiment from Ben and Jean.

BP talked about the constraint of the low angle collisions, and drew a diagram defining the range of the low angle collisions. He also talked about the need to have high values for Q^2.

BP then went on to talk about hadronisation and the amount of the photon that remains in a hadronised state.

BP and JSB told us that the only energies that now needed to be calculated were those of the positrons.

2. The web page design

There was a general discussion about the web site, and the group developed a rough outline of the structure of the site.

Action: BA will write the introduction and overview as well as the A level theory sections for the site. JSB and BP will explain the more complex theory. While TT and PP will explain and sort out the event display.

Tom said that he had already had some experience with dreamweaver, and sice the last group meeting he had been familiarising himself with the package again.

Action: need to get some sever space by next week, so that we each would be able to edit and add to our particular sections at any time.

We looked at our deadlines and noted that we had approximately 5 weeks left to complete our report and that our talk was on the 23rd of March.

Action: The group decided to set a three week deadline to have the majority of the web site up and running.

Any other business

BA made an agenda for the next group meeting. BP photocopied some information for PP and TT saw JMB about getting some server space.

Meeting Ends.

Meeting agenda and matters arising from last meeting.

-Need to write a draft of the report structure

-Finalise content of web site

1. The report

There was a general group discussion of the report.

Action: Set a target of having a rough draft of report done by Friday 8th March.

JMB talked about the length and content of the report and the need to be concise. He said it would be possible to burn a C.D. containing all the groups raw data which would not necessarily be of interest to most readers.

JMB confirmed that unlike the web site our report would be aimed at people of our academic level of understanding.

Action: It was decided that BP and JSB should write the detailed description of the theory for our report while TT and PP would write about the computer analysis.

TT asked JMB how comprehensive our data analysis section should be. He suggested that the best way to present some of the information in this section would be in the form of a flow diagram.

Action: It was decided that our report should include a section on how the group was organised and the division of responsibility written by BA

2. Computer analysis

TT and PP discussed how they would write out the event display

Action: It was decided that PP and TT should check the orange control card and order the data from ZEUS from JMB.

3. The web site

Action: JSB said that our web site should include an A level explanation of: QCD, Short and long interaction producing jets, and why in particular we are interested in the short interaction. It was decided that BA should write this.

Meeting agenda and matters arising from last meeting.

-Detailed description of the fine structure of the report needs to be worked out today

1. Content of web site

JSB suggested we include a link to a particular web site concerning asymptotic freedom, in our own web site.

There was a general group discussion about some academic web sites that have useful diagrams we could include in our own web site (with their permission).

2. Formal Report content

BP and JSB discussed their outline for the theory section of the report that they have written

Action: Have the first draft of the report finished by Friday

3. Theory

JSB explained to PP some theory concerning the energy of electrons.

BP talked about how you would define low energy collisions.

BP and JSB asked the analysis group members how long it would be from them getting the data until they would be able to produce the final results.

PP discussed confidence levels for the experiment. He said that it was reasonable to expect 95% confidence.

Action: It was decided that BA should include a section on leptons in his piece about fundamental particles on the web page

4. The event display

TT has produced an event display -already up on the web site. He talked about how other types of event displays were prohibitive because of their downloading time. TT and PP then discussed the relative merits of other types of event displays.

5. Error analysis

There was a general discussion of error analysis, and it was discovered there was a number of points the group was unclear on.

Action: It was decided that BA should arrange a meeting with JMB in order to clear up the problems we had with the error analysis.
