Installing Web browser plugins

Since many Web sites make use of Java, RealPlayer, and Flash, it is important to get them working with your Linux Web browser. These instructions should work with Mozilla, Galeon, and Konqueror.

Java plugin

The following instructions were used to install the Java 1.4.1 plugin with Red Hat Linux 8.0.

1. Download the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) from http://java.sun.com/. Choose the Linux RPM in self-extracting file format.

2. Extract the self-extracting file.
sh ./j2re-1_4_1-linux-i586-rpm.bin

3. Install the J2RE RPM.
rpm -Uvh j2re-1_4_1-fcs-linux-i586.rpm

4. As the root user, create a symbolic link to the Java virtual machine.
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

5. Confirm that the plugin is successfully installed.

Mozilla/Galeon users: Type about:plugins in the URL dialog box.
Konqueror users: Select Settings/Configure Konqueror.../Plugins/ from the menu. Click on Scan for New Plugins. Click on the Plugins tab to verify the plugin.

RealPlayer 8 plugin

The following instructions were used to install RealPlayer 8 with Red Hat Linux 8.0.

1. Install the RealPlayer 8 RPM.
rpm -Uvh http://207.188.7.150/10bce8fb25449c09ff15/unix/rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2_rpm

2. As the root user, create a symbolic link to the RealPlayer plugin.
ln -s /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/rpnp.so /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugins/rpnp.so

3. Confirm that the plugin is successfully installed.

Flash plugin

The following instructions were used to install the Flash Player 6.

1. Install the Flash Player 6 RPM.

Red Hat 9:
rpm -Uvh http://sluglug.ucsc.edu/macromedia/apt/redhat/9/RPMS.macromedia/flash-plugin-6.0.79-1.i386.rpm

Red Hat 8.0:
rpm -Uvh http://sluglug.ucsc.edu/macromedia/apt/redhat/8.0/RPMS.macromedia/flash-plugin-6.0.79-1.i386.rpm

2. Confirm that the plugin is successfully installed.
