Stuff I do

This is a list of much of the "work stuff" I've ever done. As I think about more, I'll add more, but for now it covers my time working at UCL, plus one of my summer jobs whilst I was an undergraduate -- the one related to programming :-)
Dates | Jobs | Skills summary |
---|---|---|
October 2003 ongoing | Extra work on Grid services network monitoring publication. Working with the GGF Network Monitoring working group and the Grid High-Performance Networking research group on standardised schemata and Grid Services. |
|
November 2002 ongoing | Grid services network monitoring publication. Working with the Internet 2 project and Dante, we hope to create a generic interface for a network monitoring node. We use work by the GGF Network Monitoring working group to standardise on naming and, to a certain extent, schemata. We also use Globus' implementation of the GGF's Open Grid Services Infrastructure. The Globus implementation uses Java web services, with SOAP-RPC (JAX-RPC) function calls described by WSDL. |

March 2003 onwards | This web page. This web page has allowed me to learn and explore HTML and CSS. To create the consistent look I have used a Perl script which combines page content with a template. A custom Makefile is used to ensure that the HTML pages are up to date. |

March 2002 - March 2003 (and ongoing support) | R-GMA network monitoring publication. The successor to the MDS in the EDG is R-GMA -- a relational database implementation of the GGF's Grid Monitoring Architecture. The R-GMA system uses web servlets implemented in Java, with client-side APIs in Java, C, C++, Perl and Python. The R-GMA project itself made use of the principles Extreme Programming. |

June 2002 - January 2003 | UCL grid node administration. The UCL grid node was primarily intended as a place where problems with the installation and maintenance of a grid node could be identified. This meant that problems could be identified and fixed before other sites were affected. Most of the machines of the node were installed using a fabric management system called LCFG, which was developed at Edinburgh and adapted for the EDG. Some machines required to be set up manually, due to the possessive nature of LCFG. Since the beginning of 2003 Ben Waugh has been in charge of the grid node, but I still work on it occasionally. |
|
August 2001 - January 2003 | MDS Network monitoring publication. Network monitoring information published using a modified version of Globus' MDS system. The MDS system relies on a series of LDAP servers, with clients directed to the information they desire using referrals. Information was inserted into the information system with backend Perl scripts on the LDAP servers. Also wrote bugfixes for related software, including C patches for a GridFTP server program. |
|
July 2000 - September 2000 (and ongoing support) | Crude oil assay checking and reporting program for BP Analytical (later ITS Testing Services, Sunbury). A large, program to collect, verify and report the results of hundreds of tests performed on crude oil samples. Results were stored in a database using using the LIMS system, and could be retrieved with ODBC plugins. The program was written in Visual Basic for Applications for Excel, to attempt to leverage the automatic cell calculations. |
|
July 1999 - September 1999 | Summer student at BP Analytical in Sunbury. Worked in the Crude Oil Assay section as a lab assistant, performing a variety of high-precision tests on the chemical and physical properties of various crude oils and distilled fractions of crude oils. Also batched up and distributed crude oils and fractions to be tested in other departments within BP. |
|
August 1998 - September 1998 | Summer student at Analytical Data Services in Sunbury. ADS is a small analytical company, based at the time at BP Analytical, and specialising in analysis of water-based samples. |
