Slow Start Threshold The relation between Slow Start and Congestion Avoidance With the explosive increase of slow start and the conservative mechanism of congestion avoidance, some threshold must be kept to choose between the two modes. The commonality between the two modes is the use of cwnd: slow start grows cwnd exponentially, whilst congavoid grows it linearly with the reciept of every ack.
